Cuisine Overview

Although typical Brahmin food is known to be vegetarian, GSB food incorporates sea food as a key ingredient in their cuisine! Many GSBs are non-vegetarian, although some choose to remain vegetarians. The reason for this is that GSBs migrated to mainly coastal areas, with Goa itself being located on the West coast of India, causing seafood to be one of the staples in meals. As well as this, the presence of coconut trees also impacted the cuisine, as many GSB meals include ground coconut or are made using coconut oil.  They also have rice as an accompaniment with meals rather than flatbread, as it is one of the key available ingredients in the area. Some of the most beloved dishes include fish curry, patradho (a Konkani delicacy made of fried Colocasia leaves) and dali toy, a lentil soup made typically using toor dal.

Special Foods

On the occassion of religious festivals, such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, or Varshik (death anniversary) specific dishes are made for these occassions.

One of the occassions is Varshik, known as the death anniversary completed every year after a death of a loved one. This ceremony is also known as Shraddha.

Varshik Dishes

Some foods are repeated, as they are foods that are usually prepared for GSB special occassions. Some of these foods are solely made on Varshik occassions, such as Var and Gharyo. Usually, some bitter foods such as Karathe sukke are included in order to have a bitter taste to match the sombre mood on the occassion of a death anniversary.
